Project Overview

Since the inception of Vodafone’s Telco Cloud, I have been exclusively engaged as a VMware PSO Senior Consultant for the enterprise customer Vodafone Germany. The VMware vCloud Director platform I managed formed the basis of Vodafone’s IaaS operating model and represented the core of the Telco Cloud infrastructure.

I played a key role in the successful introduction and operation of Europe’s largest VMware vCloud Director instance, which managed almost the entire Telco Cloud infrastructure of Vodafone Germany until 2024. The project was characterized by pioneering work and innovation.


Responsibilities & Contributions

  • Platform & Infrastructure
    • Built, operated, and expanded the Telco Cloud IaaS platform.
    • Supported vendors during onboarding of their Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and ensured operational stability.
    • Performed platform-level troubleshooting to maintain smooth VNF operations.
    • Responsible for site deployments, including the use of VCE Vision™ Intelligent Operations, HPE OneView, and Dell OpenManage.
    • Authorized to perform administrative tasks at hardware platform level for EMC, HPE, and Dell during deployments and troubleshooting.
  • Reliability & Escalation Management
    • Took ownership in critical escalations, including incidents potentially affecting millions of customers.
    • Worked nights and off-hours to restore and stabilize critical systems.
    • Managed incident escalation, case handling, and direct interaction with VMware Premier Support.
  • Custom Solutions
    • Developed PowerShell-based backup mechanisms for VMware appliances.
    • Designed and implemented a Linux-based backup infrastructure integrated into Avamar, securing the entire platform.
    • Implemented VMware vSphere Replication 8.5 for disaster recovery.
    • Established a comprehensive monitoring and logging framework with VMware Aria Log Insight, including custom log pipelines and dashboards.
  • Security & Clearance
    • Cleared at SÜ2 level (German reliability & security clearance), qualifying for sensitive and security-relevant tasks in infrastructure operations.

  • Operation and maintenance of vSphere, vCloud Director, vRealize/Aria Operations.

  • VM import/export management in complex VMware infrastructures.
  • Configuration of blocking tasks and affinity rules in vSphere.

Backup & Restore

  • Backup and restore procedures for vSphere and vCloud Director.
  • Automated PowerShell scripting for backup and restore.
  • Integration of backup endpoints on Linux servers with Avamar.
  • Validation and testing of restore functionality.
  • Syslog-based monitoring of backup processes, integration with Log Insight and Nagios, dashboard alerting.

Support & Troubleshooting

  • Escalation management and prevention.
  • Case analysis and direct engagement with VMware Premier Support.
  • Performance and log analysis across VMware NFV suite.
  • Network troubleshooting: Subnetting, routing, packet encapsulation, hypervisor-level packet capture (pktcap-uw).

Linux Systems

  • Installation, configuration, maintenance of Linux servers.
  • User and rights management.
  • Monitoring, performance optimization, lifecycle management.
  • Backup and recovery procedures, SFTP-based storage solutions.
  • Automation with Bash and Python scripts.
  • Network troubleshooting with tcpdump, firewall administration (iptables, SELinux).
  • Administration of network services (DNS, routing, SIP, RTP, RTCP, SS7, MGCP).

Documentation & Training

  • Extensive documentation of systems, procedures, and custom solutions.
  • Training and knowledge transfer to customer engineers.
  • Technical documentation in Wiki and Confluence.
  • Evaluation of new tools to improve efficiency in VMware/Linux operations.

Vendor Support

  • Vendor onboarding and offboarding – guided vendors through the complete lifecycle of onboarding to the Telco Cloud, from registration and configuration to the safe decommissioning of resources.
  • Supported vendors (Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, Redknee, Cisco, Red5) with onboarding and troubleshooting.
  • Guidance on correct usage of Telco Cloud resources.
  • Case handling and escalation management for vendor issues.
  • Troubleshooting at VM level from vendor perspective.
  • Analysis of vCloud Director API issues (timeouts, performance).
  • Assisted in configuration and troubleshooting of Fault Tolerance, Blocking Tasks, Affinity Rules.

Project Management & Leadership

  • Independent development of custom solutions.
  • Temporary project lead and team coordination during absences.
  • Risk management and proactive escalation prevention.
  • Task and project prioritization.
  • Stakeholder and vendor communication for problem-solving and service-level assurance.

Achievements

  • Played a key role in Vodafone’s Telco Cloud transformation, supporting one of Europe’s largest virtualization environments.
  • Developed custom backup and monitoring solutions that became critical to long-term platform stability.
  • Maintained 24/7 availability and service continuity in one of the most critical enterprise cloud environments in Europe.
